Situated in the eaves of an old print press, the loft conversion of Sixtysix magazine editor Chris Force is a study in the consideration of meaning. Originally designed by George C. Nimmons in 1916 as part of the Chicago School of architecture, the building served as an operational print house until 1989, when it was converted into lofts.
Force combined two adjacent units to create a larger home for his family. Partnering with PROjECT Interiors for the renovation, the result is 2,000 square feet, where nothing is overlooked and everything has purpose and meaning.
Force explains that he aimed to create a design that goes deeper than aesthetics – one rooted in meaning and connection. He sought to unify design, details and furniture that carry personal significance – design that’s more than skin deep.
Modern furnishings are carefully sourced from around the world – from Australian rugs to design classics often featured in the pages of his magazine. Colours are earthy and warm, creating a space that feels welcoming rather than stark, a home to be lived in and enjoyed.
The kitchen and bathroom receive the full bespoke treatment, with custom cabinetry and rich materials layered for depth and tactility. Buster + Punch hardware, shelving and switches elevate the details throughout the renovation, particularly in these two rooms where coherence and touch are paramount. One combo worth noting is the pairing of the Grohe SPA mixer and Buster + Punch bathroom pieces, all perfectly matched in finish and aesthetic.
