Pro Tips to Transform Your Kitchen With Annika Rowson

To kickstart 2026 and inspire any kitchen projects in the pipeline, we linked up with Annika Rowson to talk shop. The New Zealand-based award-winning designer has wowed us since day one with creative, thought-provoking work that brings new meaning to the adage that the kitchen is the heart of the home.

Why choose Solid metal hardware?
For my designs, quality over quantity is everything there is nothing nicer than a solid, well-made metal element

What does knurling bring to the table when used on hardware and handles?
Knurling offers a beautiful texture interest, and texture is something I can’t get enough of in my designs. It also offers a timeless and elegant aesthetic.

What B+P finishes match with specific styles or kitchen colourways?
I love Smoked Bronze paired with a rich veneer. I also love exploring tone-on-tone. Finally, Brass pairs beautifully with a classic neutral for a timeless space.

How do you take the solid metal aesthetic further?
I often incorporate metal into my designs, whether it’s in an island back, rangehood unit or negative detailing. I like to see feature materials applied in threes to create a material cohesion; tapware plays a key role there.

How important is light in the kitchen and what should we be considering?
Light is incredibly important in the kitchen. We always focus on firstly what natural light is on offer, can enhance with a skylight if viable, then look to appropriate task and feature lighting.

Function and form, or both?
Ohh, both if balanced!! You can have both if the space is designed well.

What role does the kitchen as a space play in our lives today?
The kitchen is a huge component in our day-to-day living – it is not just a utility space but the hub of the home. It is more than just a space to cook meals in but one to live in and connect, share and celebrate.

What are the main kitchen trends you’re tracking for 2026?
I am a huge fan of rich veneer and see burled veneer coming through in the near future – we have dabbled a little already. Plate stainless steel at 5mm is pretty hot for a refined, architectural edge. Also, as always, you can’t go past a phenomenal natural stone. Curves are still going strong in various radii and bronze tapware is also growing in popularity.

Islands… Nice to have? Or integral? Is there and is there an alternative for smaller spaces?
Nice to have, for sure, but not every space allows it. A U-shaped kitchen is a super functional alternative option if you have a windowless wall for tall units, for example.
